POODLE

WHAT IS A POODLE?

The Poodle is the national dog of France, and the French sure do love their Poodles. In France, Poodles are known as the Caniche, or “duck dog.”Despite the Poodle’s association with France, the breed originated as a duck hunter in Germany, where the word “pudelin” refers to splashing in water. The Standard Poodle began its development as a retrieving water dog more than 400 years ago. With a crisp, curly coat as protection against the elements, superlative swimming ability, and off-the-charts intelligence, the Poodle was, and still is, a magnificent retriever.

Poodles come in four size varieties: Standards should be more than 20" tall at the shoulder, Moyens, also known as medium, are between 15"-19" at the shoulder while Miniatures are 10"-15" and the Toys stand no more than 10" tall at the shoulder. All four varieties have the same build and proportions.

BEHAVIOR & TEMPERAMENT

Poodles are eager, athletic, and wickedly smart “real dogs” of remarkable versatility. The Standard, with his greater size and strength, is the best all-around athlete of the family, but all Poodles can be trained with great success. The poodle is one of the most obedient and smartest dogs, which combines a playful enthusiasm and an adventurous spirit. Preserving its love for hunting, it is fond of swimming, running and retrieving. Although is may be shy with strangers, it is very good with children.

OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG

WHAT IS AN OLD ENGLISH SHEEPDOG?

The Old English Sheepdog stands among the truly iconic dogs of the British Isles. The “Bobtail,” as the breed is often known, was most likely developed in the west of England, in the counties of Devon and Somerset and the Duchy of Cornwall.  The Old English Sheepdog is the archetypical shaggy dog, famous for his profuse coat and peak-a-boo hairdo, a distinctive bear-like gait, and a mellow, agreeable nature. The OES is a big, agile dog who enjoys exploring and a good romp while striving for companionship with its family. Although their hair is plentiful, their amazing coat is little to  non-shedding.

BEHAVIOR & TEMPERAMENT

The Old English Sheepdog is stable and happy-go-lucky. They have a strong herding instinct and, therefore, they adapt well to calm, confident and consistent leadership from their family. Equally famed are their many fine house-dog qualities: watchfulness, courage, kindliness, and intelligence. Great with children, Old English Sheepdogs make patient, protective playmates. These traits make them excellent family dogs with a love for play and hard work when necessary.
